Bits and Pis’es

Manneken Pis reputedly attracts more cameras than a Hollywood premiere.  So what does this little fella have that Brangelina don’t?  Well a wardrobe of around 800 suits apparently.  Whilst most people will stop for a photo, I wonder how many will make it to the 2nd floor of the Museum of the City of Brussels to check out his wardrobe?


On the second floor of the museum are a hundred statues presenting a selection of suits from around the world, some of them are quite incredible, although a little difficult to photograph through the display glass.  There are also pull out drawers of further outfits.

The suits or costumes are gifts from embassies, tourist offices, sportsmen and others who wish to honour him just for being him, the first one was a gift from the Elector of Bavaria in 1698.

Though with all those clothes to wear, you’ll still normally find him naked, hand on his prized family jewels, ah, relieving himself into the fountain below.  He’s been kidnapped and smashed to pieces and leaves people divided as to whether he belongs or not, but he’s still there.  For now.

There are other interesting things in the Museum and it’s well worth a look.  I was particularly in awe of these stunning porcelain tea sets, which whilst not my thing, I thought were incredibly beautiful in design and not as flouncy as I would normally associate with a tea set.

Of course, as I mentioned before, everyone who visits Brussels knows about Manneken Piss, but perhaps not so many know about Jeanneke Pis.  She exists in a little dead end alleyway some streets behind the Museum of the City of Brussels.  Erected in 1987, she was built ‘in honour of loyalty’.  It is believed that if you throw a coin into the bowl of the fountain, your wish will be granted.  There’s nowhere near as many people visiting Jeanneke as Manneken, I’m not sure why – he just seems to be the hero in town.


For the rest of the day I decide that the sightseeing bus is the way to go – my ankle is annoying me and as much as I’m in love with the Grand Place, I do also want to see some more of Brussels.  Settling into my seat on the bus, a young French girl in front of me asks me a question, which for obvious reasons I do not understand.  ‘English?’ I ask her.  She shakes her head, but proceeds to put her thumb and forefinger across her nose and snort like an elephant, which I take to mean ‘do you have a tissue?’  I do and pass the packet to her.  She takes one, blows her nose and then hands it to her boyfriend.  He also blows his nose before handing it back to her.  Yep, she blows again, into the same tissue.  I gotta laugh cause surely it would have been easy to ask for two tissues?

The bus trundles through the streets of Brussels.  The bus is absolutely packed with holiday makers (school holidays in Europe I believe), so I don’t want to chance getting of and having to wait for another bus, which kind of suits me fine cause I’m happy to take it all in and observe the streets and sights.

The Atomium is one such sight.  Another common thing to see in Brussels, the Atomium was constructed in 1958 for the Brussels’s World Fair.  It was meant to symbolise “the democratic will to maintain peace among all the nations, faith in progress, both technical and scientific and, finally, an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, super-technological world for a better life for mankind”, somehow.  Well, it definitely is nice and shiny and the tourists love it.

Having enough of the bus, I hop off at the starting point and decide to walk back to the hotel.  In the streets surrounding the old town, I stop to watch some skateboarders practising their tricks, applause and whistles all round if they make their jumps, disappointment clear when they don’t.


I pop into a local shop and buy a selection of Belgian fruit beers – cherry, banana and apple, and with my newly acquired Manneken Pis bottle opener (sometimes you just gotta get a tacky souvenir), I kicked back and enjoyed these babies.

Windmills and Waffles

I’ve decided to take a later train to Brussels so I can fit in one last thing in Bruges that I didn’t get around to doing yesterday.  I arrive at a bike shop just off the Markt bright and early as soon as they open so I can grab me some wheels and head out to the edge of town.


All day yesterday I watched people buzzing about on bikes an I thought it’d be a nice way to end my time in Bruges, by cycling out along the city canal to where the windmills are.  I know most people would associate windmills with Holland, but they were found here too and I want to see a real life windmill (no, the one at the old Dutch Windmill garden centre in Perth does not count, and it doesn’t exist anymore anyway).  A 1 hour bike rental cost me 4 euros from the rental shop at Hotel Koffeboontje in Hallestraat – they seemed to have one of the earliest opening times, which suits me fine.  The streets are so quiet, just the sound of my tyres over the cobblestones and the faint rattling of my bicycle bell as I trail through the streets, hopefully in the right direction.

I reach the edge of the old town in no time at all and turning left along the canal spot my first windmill.  There used to be about 25 windmills in Bruges, but now only a few remain.  Most seem to have been built around the 1700’s, and you can go inside some of them at times.  They aren’t open this morning.

The second windmill was not far away, and surprise, surprise – also appeared to be the scene of an art installation for the Triennale, its surrounding face covered in lacework.

Last thing on my to do list ticked off, I cycle back through town, stopping to snap away every now again, and return my bike before stopping for a coffee and croissant.


Then it’s time to board the train for my short ride to Brussels, where I’ll be spending the next two nights.

I put Brussels on the list when I saw pictures of the magnificent architecture in the town square – the Grand Place.  And it did not disappoint.  You can’t tell someone how gorgeous it is when you finally see it in the flesh.  The gothic architecture is just stunning.

For lunch I head to one of the little cafes in the square so I can admire the setting.  Whilst waiting for my chicken volauvent, my glass of wine arrives, along with a little dish of biscuit snacks, which seem to be customary when dining in Belgium.


I really can’t get over just how gorgeous the Grand Place is!  And in the middle, they are preparing for Flowertime 2015, which opens in a few days time – unfortunately after I’ve left.  Flowertime showers the Grand Place with a beautiful floral carpet and also adorns the inside of the Ville de Bruxelles (or Town Hall) with floral arrangements and décor.  It’s only in its first few days of creation, but already I could imagine just how beautiful a scene this will create in the week ahead.


Something that Belgium is definitely famous for is waffles.  And I want to know how to make a good waffle, so I’m joining a waffle workshop to find out how.  Walking around the streets there are waffle shops all over the place.

As we leave the Grand Place, we head down a street you could probably call Waffle Street for all the waffle shops here.  Above each is a little 1€ sign.  And there is a story behind it – a young man wanted to buy a present for his girlfriend so he set up a waffle shop here, selling waffles for €1 to make enough money.  Everyone else thought, well we can do this too!  Which started up a competition – the trick is that unless you buy a plain waffle with nothing on it – you won’t pay €1.  Each topping costs money so they usually end up being about €5/6.  And you’ll see tourists everywhere walking around with their waffles saturated with toppings.

But there are all different types of waffles.  In fact, like so many of our favourite foods from far and away, the Belgian waffle was created in New York for the 1964 World’s Fair.  Sold as “bel-gem” waffles, they were actually based on the Brussels waffle with a little tweaking.

So what’s a Brussels waffle, you ask?  They are made with a thin, yeast batter making them nice and light.  They are rectangular in appearance with deeper holes.  Leige waffles are made with a more bread like dough, thick and sticky.  This dough contains chunks of sugar, which caramelise and form a crisp golden coating.  When it comes out of the waffle maker, this waffle is uneven with a sweeter, more chewier taste.

We arrive at our workshop location and are given our recipe.  After a brief demonstration, we are left to our own devices.  Eek!  And the end result?  Look at these babies!




We are heartily encouraged to cook and eat as many of these dough devils as possible, but it’s a tough job.  Well for some – the American’s in our class seem to have no trouble shoving them down the hatch.  My waffles, though they look huge, are actually just cut up portions of one.  This hands on afternoon has been great fun and best of all – I now have the recipe to make them at home!

Absolutely, Amazingingly, Gorgeous Little Bruges

Bruges is a tourist town.  The problem with tourist towns is that there are tourists everywhere – duh!  What that means to me is that you get photo after photo of bunches of tourists everywhere in your backgrounds, or worse still you can’t even get a half decent shots because they are all milling around with thousands of selfie-sticks and IPAD’s.  The best way to get around this is to get an early start in the morning.  Get up before everyone else while they are still rising and shining and taking their time over their hotel breakfast.  This is the best way to enjoy some peace and quiet in a tourist town.

Well, almost.  Cause just about everyone else has the same idea here in Bruges.

Lining up for a canal ride, this is clear.  It’s not even 10am and people are lining up to be first on board.  It’s the thing to do in Bruges, you see.  And all the guide books recommend it.  8 euros gets you a 30 minute cruise along the waterways of Bruges, unfolding gorgeous storybook photo opportunities, whilst giving you a brief history of the town and other points of interest.   Swans line the river banks as you gently power your way alongside a town awakening for the day.  Best taken on a sunny day, I was in luck and I have to say, it was well worth it.

Of particular interest to all who saw him (there’s always the occasional tourist looking totally the wrong way, head swivelling, ‘where?, where?’), was this little guy.  He’s Bruges’ most famous resident, Fidel.  Living at the Cote Canal Bed and Breakfast, this gorgeous Golden Labrador spends his days surveying the waterways from this little window, causing tourists to jump up from their boat seats with delight when they spot him.

Not only is he famous for having the title of the most photographed dog in Bruges (probably everyone you meet in Bruges will have a photo of him in their album), but he actually had a cameo role in the Colin Farrell movie “In Bruges”.  He’s even in the movie trailer…

It was interesting to note that at various points throughout the day, whenever I saw a boat boarding point, there was always a queue of people waiting to board.

Bruges was once one of Europe’s largest ports, however this came to an end after silt flooded the river, making this impossible.  Much of the town was rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries to reflect medieval times.  Known as the Venice of the North – it is just beautiful.  A great way to find out about the history of Bruges, is to visit the Historium, which I did after finding the brochure in my hotel foyer.

First you take an audio visual tour that tells the story of Jacob and his life in the middle ages.  You go from room to room to follow the story and get a real feel for what it was like, finding out about the establishment of the stock exchange, the development of oil painting and why Bruges was a wealthy, thriving powerhouse throughout the middle ages.  Afterwards, visit the small museum to reinforce what you were told in the audio visual presentation.

You can even send a postcard home!

Historium Postcard

If you buy the combination ticket, like I did, you can also have a beer tasting afterwards (of course, you can just wander up here yourself and buy a beer), out on the balcony overlooking the Markt.  It’s a lovely view overlooking the terrace and there is a signboard comparing the view to 1435 Bruges, pointing out remaining buildings surrounding the Markt.



But before you leave, make sure you head out the back to check out the Virtual Reality Laboratorium.  Put on your headgear and fly over Bruges to discover the Sint-Donaas Church and Waterhalle, (both of which were demolished in the 18th century) recreated in all their glory thanks to computer generated imagery (CGI).  It’s a very strange experience, sitting in your booth, with this headgear on, being able to look all around you, including behind you, to see Bruges.  I thought it was incredible, although it only lasts about 8 minutes.  Best of all, it’s free for Historium visitors, though tips are appreciated.  The VRL runs until December this year as an experiment to see how they could incorporate this technology into the museum.  At times it can get very busy and they advise to book ahead, though I had no such problem, simply walking in.

As well as being a tourist town, there are several other things Bruges is know for – chocolate, beer, frites and mussels.  And all of these you can find in abundance.  The town square, or Markt, is surrounded on two sides by historic buildings and on the other two sides by restaurants enticing visitors to sit down to ‘moules and frites’ (mussels and chips), with a nice cold beer to go along.  The chocolate shops line all those little streets feeding off the Markt.


For lunch it’s hard to resist a pot of moules and they have my favourite kind here – white and cream based with herbs.  It looks like it’ll be tough work making it through the whole pot, but once the shells are out of the equation, the mussels start disappearing rapidly.  They are divine.  Now when you order moules in most cases you will also be bought a plate of frites, regardless of whether you asked for them or not.  They pretty much come as a standard side to anything – Flemish Stew and breakfast omelettes included.  The mussels (oops, sorry moules) are great and if you are a fan, you should definitely make sure they are part of your diet in Bruges.

It’s worth noting that the Triennale Brugge 2015 is currently running until 18 October 2015 and as a result there are a bunch of temporary outdoor art installations around town, including this one outside the St Salvator Cathedral by Song Dong, a Chinese artist who grew up in a prosperous, traditional family until the Cultural Revolution changed that.  This work, called Nothing Doing Nothing, represents this story and is based on the traditional art of bonsai.  The work integrates old Chinese windows saved from destruction, referring to his home country where historic buildings, temples and neighbourhoods are destroyed to make way for glass skyscrapers and monolith shopping centres.  Quite a remarkable piece of work and a powerful statement.

I decide to venture further out from the town centre, with not much idea of where I am going, but while there’s plenty of people around, I’m sure I’ll be ok.  I step into a shop called The Chocolate Kiss to stock up on choccy’s (for sampling purposes only of course!) and a chocolate beer – you’ve got to try it once I reckon.

Next door a bit, I step into a grumpily manned frite store to try out the real deal – and yes despite the service, they are amazing!  Beautifully golden and crisp, wrapped in a paper cone with a little fork for you to enjoy.


Next I step inside a lace shop – not usually my kind of shop, but something has caught my eye whilst standing outside the window casually munching down my frites, so I decide to check it out.  They have a cool collection of bobbin lace jewellery.  Bobbin lace is made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread, wound on bobbins.  I don’t know much more than that, but it looks incredible intricate and time consuming.   I also know I won’t be leaving Bruges without this amazing bracelet.


Moving on the streets become a little quieter until I reach the Begijnhof or Beguinage, the Ten Wijngaerde Beguinage to be precise.  Beguinage is a French term that refers to a semi-monastic community of women called Beguines, who seek to serve God but without removing themselves from the world outside.  This Beguinage was UNESCO heritage listed in 1998 for its exceptional universal value and still retains a religious and social function today.  It’s certainly a place of peace and solitude and signs posted around the grounds ask visitors to keep quite and show respectful behaviour.

There is also another art installation here, this one titled Tree Huts in Bruges by Tadashi Kawamata.  I’ll leave the interpretation up to you, but tree houses are a strange sight to see whilst in the grounds of the Begijnhof – something you’d normally associate with the laughter of children, where children and laughter are forbidden.

My cousin Chris recommended that I make time to try the patisseries in Bruges, so I can’t let him down.  Not far down Philipstockstraat, off the Markt, I come across Le Pain Quotidien, tempted by the beautiful pastries in their store window.


Turns out Le Pain Quotidien was first opened in Brussels in 1990 and there are more than 200 stores worldwide, including one in Sydney.  So much for finding an age old family run patisserie in Bruges.  But it was gorgeous just the same and well worth the visit.

Bruges is a lovely little town.  Take your time and wander her streets, taking it all in, the clip clop of horse hooves on the cobblestones, the history and the incredible architecture.  And it’s prettiness.

Time seems to slow in Bruges and it seems incredible to think how much I fit into this day, but there’s still one thing I didn’t get to do, and if I wing my train ride tomorrow, I might just be able to fit it in!

Next Stop Bruges

It’s hard to believe my time in Wales (land of giant bumblebees and pigeons – I swear both are about three times as big here as they are at home!) has come to an end.  Thanks to my wonderful hosts I’ve managed to get a well rounded overview of Wales and had a fantastic time.


Chris and Sharon have been to a few of the places I have on my itinerary so I’m fully armed with tips and must see’s.

But time has come to an end here in Wales has and I’m moving on to Belgium, first stop Bruges (via London and Brussels) – gonna be a long day!

I share the train from Swansea to Cardiff with hordes of locals off to see a game (I’m assuming by all the red shirts).  It’s absolutely packed – standing room only.  I’m glad I was at the front of the queue and managed to get a seat. The mob is buzzing, fuelled by the cans of alcohol they are consuming well before 11am in the morning.  At each station more people pile on – I don’t know which spaces they are squeezing themselves into!  Finally the train arrives in Cardiff and departs with a much lighter (and quieter) load.

At Paddington I grab a taxi and head off to St Pancras to catch the Eurostar – my first trip on it in fact.  I clear customs and have a while to wait before my train, but with this massive backpack there’s no way I was going to fill in time wandering around.  Soon enough the Eurostar is departing and I settle in for the ride.  It’s only a few hours to Brussels and I don’t even notice the train going underground across the channel.  I swap trains and despite the lack of English around, end up on what seems to be the correct train to Bruges.

Out the window of the train, two baby deer frolick at the edge of the woodlands alongside the railway line, and startle at the noise of the train passing by.  Quaint little towns pass by the window and it’s not long before Bruges station comes into sight.  I am a little anxious as to whether this is my stop as the monitor on the train only seems to speak German.  Luckily many German words are similar to English words and I feel I know enough to be sure I can get off here.

I arrive in Bruges just as the sun has set and darkness is just starting to set in.  I  punch in the code I have been given before arriving to access my room and climb the narrow circular stairway to my room.  It’s very cute and clean with a view out of the tops of the surrounding buildings.  I want to head out and join the crowds of people in the town square.  It’s not far from my hotel, although I’m not sure which way, but I follow the noise and soon enough reach it without trouble.

Diners pack the tables surrounding the square, with people walking and cycling around the outskirts.  It’s quite clear that the town is full of tourists.

I can’t wait to get out and explore the city tomorrow (along with al the other tourists).
